I would just try flushing the system, and swapping thermostats. The 86 had horrible heating up problems because of a blocked up radiator. Check the fan clutch too.

It's not plugged up, it's pissing the coolant out on the engine side.
Headgasket, waterpump, or cracked head/block - hopefully water pump.

The opposite of the radiator side...
meaning its not a radiator, its something on or in the engine..

im going to sell it i think, and get something else, but until then, i gotta fix it. i want a fast car but i dont want a huge car payment. thats the only thing, im not down with the $600+ car payment of a nice fast car, and insurance too. oh god... $300 or more. right now im loving the no car payment and $80 for insurance. but now its another $60 for waterpump..hopefully. anyone want to pick me up from work? lol. If you can find an older buick or pontiac grand prix that has the 3800 series II engine in it.. especially if the buick was owned by older folks, those can be had for a low payment or cheap cash, and that engine is pretty close to bulletproof. Or a jeep with the inline 6cylinder 4.0. Preferably '96 or newer. Out the side?! If it was an ollllddd GM 350 I would start thinking freeze plugs.. but I have no idea if those explorers had them.

Did you see if it was leaking out of the weep hole under the water pump neck? If it's been going bad there should be evidence of it leaking

It's fixed.
Freeze plug in the front of the head had corroded. Replaced with a new one, so far so good - at least for that problem.
Now I need to stop by and talk to Chris Goeschel and see about something else - I'm sick of fixing cars..
