Hello, I'm new here and am looking for some help with what to do on my IRS to keep it together. Here's the situation. I am in the process of installing a whipple 140ax and supporting mods on my 03 convertible and will be close to 600HP when done. I have a Billetflow brace to install as a first step; but now the more I read the more pissed I get as this just escalates into a VERY expensive deal just to control wheel hop so I won't break the POS. I don't race, and never do hard street launches. Do I really have to dump another $1000+ and Hours of labor so the only thing I'll break then is a half shaft? Or can I put the brace on and $100 worth of bushings and be good? Or should I swap the thing out for a solid axle which, IMO, trashes the resale down the road. All I want is to be able to enjoy the new HP. Any suggestions? I wish I would have known what a failure the IRS is before I bought the car. I notice they don't put it on the GT500's.

yeah I fought with wheel hope for a long time. The brace is definately a must have mod.
For 49 buxs get the IRS bracket from Billetflow http://www.billetflow.com/IRS_Brackets.htm that helped me with my vert.

I did get the IRS grip in box from MM... IRS Grip Box for 1999-04 Cobra for $795.00 and that took care of the problem but a high price. It comes with
MMRG-21

* Delrin Rear Lower Control Arm Bushings
* Delrin Rear Upper Control Arm Bushings
* IRS Subframe bushings
* IRS adjustable Tie-rod kit
* Rear swaybar bushings
* Rear sway bar end link kit
* Urethane differential mounts

The install is a PITA

It doesnt get any cheaper after that, after upgrading to 700rwhp I had to add level 5 halfshafts for 1500 buxs to stop the half shafts from breaking.

If you want to keep it cheap, put the brace, bushings and bracket and you may have to pay 150 buxs for stock halfshafts is they break. Nittos and a hard launch will do the trick.

I do enjoy the IRS tho, the smooth ride is worth it.

You think I'll be alright as long as i only pin it after the clutch is out and get out if I get wheel hop? I heard wheel hop is what breaks stuff. I'm pretty easy on the car and never do hard starts from

Your drivetrain is only going to be as strong as your weakest link.

Clutch -> Driveshaft -> IRS -> Tires

If you ease it out off the line and then lay into it you should be ok for a while, its (some) wheel hop but mostly the launches on sticky tires that really kill the drivetrain.

At least do the brace if nothing else, it is cheap insurance.

The Brace is a DEF must have as far as the rest Ive done lots of cobras some with huge wheel hop issues and some w/o ive noticed that there's a large part to do with rear tires and psi. The maximum kit is great also but more for the piece of mind. The bushings I feel don't help at all but really amplify the effects of wheel hop. Do the brace and be done with it. wink.gif
